Sidewiki - another item on the social media menu

What is it?
According to Google, "Sidewiki is a browser sidebar that lets you contribute and read information alongside any web page".  It's a feature in the Google Toolbar that lets you to publish information about websites right in your browser, read comments left by other users and share information on social media sites such as Blogger, Facebook and Twitter.

How do you get it?
Everyone has access to the tool - you just need to download the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. However, not everyone has or wants to download these tools, so I'm not sure how quickly this tool is going to take off.
You can try it here http://www.google.com/sidewiki/intl/en/index.html

So what?
Sidewiki is just another item on the social media menu.  As a business owner, you should be aware that the public or your competitors can leave comments, both good and bad, in Sidewiki, but it's worth noting that they could also post these comments in numerous blogs and discussion forums on the internet, and you don't have time to control what people are writing.  So for now, I'd say focus on building your company's reputation by providing great products and fantastic service, and maybe think about implementing a buzz monitoring program if you want to get some insight into what people think about your company.

Can't wait to try HTML Ipsum

I came across this site yesterday.  It has a whole swag of Lorem Ipsum sample text, already marked up with HTML tags.  Suffice to say, it's saved in my favourites, and will come in handy when I need to flesh out web page with some sample text.

I was wondering (outloud) why such sites are created.  They have a limited use, and don't seem like it would ever make any money.  My take on it is that webbies share their little tricks online, so that the really clever web designers (or even beginners like me) can spend more of their time coming up with better stuff - not having to create tagged Lorem Ipsum every time they want to see what a site looks like.
